Principal's Greeting

Dear P.S./I.S. 173 Students and Families,

It is with great excitement that I write this message of introduction to you as the principal of the new P.S./I.S. 173. In every conversation and interaction with staff members, it becomes more evident how wonderful and dedicated this community of families and learners are. I feel very fortunate to be of service to you all.

My dedication to the field of education spans nineteen years, working with students ranging in age from 3 years old - 6th grade in a variety of roles including Students with Disabilities and Multilingual Learners at all levels and most recently, serving as Assistant Principal at PS 5.  It is my hope to leverage my experiences, to partner with you to ensure your child's success. Education is a life-long process and you all can expect that I will continue to learn about the uniqueness and needs of P.S./I.S. 173 this year and in the years to come.

On a personal note, I am a product of New York City’s Public Schools, attending Public Schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Moving on to City College CUNY earning my Bachelor’s in Education and Master’s in Education (Literacy Acquisition) and finally to The College of Saint Rose for my Master’s of Educational Leadership Degree. These Public Institutions afforded me very positive experiences in my education that were crucial to my success. This year we will be committed to ensuring High Expectations for ALL students and doing so while ensuring a warm and affirming environment as students return to in person learning.

As we prepare for this school year, returning amidst this pandemic, let’s all acknowledge that it may feel different for everyone. I want to ensure you that we will be prioritizing student’s social and emotional well being in addition to academic instructional needs. For many students, it will be their first time back in the building with all their friends in over a year.  This year, more than ever before, it will be so important to reestablish and deepen the relationships between home and school.

Students will be at the center of all school-related decisions.  I am eager to unite my experience, my openness to learn, and my child-centered approach to support our students.  Because the relationships between families and the school are vital to the success of our students, I encourage you to become involved in every way possible.  Looking forward to meeting you all soon!

Sincerely,
Ms. Latosha Kellum
Principal
